Did you sponsor a 2021 AV Calendar?

Thank you to everyone who sponsored an AV block Calendar to be sent overseas this year. We were able to send over 50 calendars out to the Philippines and have received a lovely letter from Pastor Ballonado in Bocaue to say they have been safely received. May they richly bless all who receive them.

AV Calendar Distribution in Zambia

It has been a great relief to us to hear from Duwen Musaka, our contact in Zambia, at last. We were concerned to have some feedback to learn how our AV calendars had been received, on behalf of those who had so generously sponsored them.
Apparently getting the Zambian postal service to freely release the boxes was a marathon in itself for him to begin with, as corruption is so rife.
From then on distribution was made gradually made as he visited various churches in and around Kabwe, where he is based, and also the rural areas further afield. This is in the Copperbelt region of Zambia.

Duwen is a very busy man and his report was delayed, but it is here at last, and this is an extract from it:-

Here are some more accompanying photos of  Duwen handing out the calendars, and some ready recipients:-

Is it too early to talk Christmas?

So, dare we mention Christmas? We hate to do it too early, but seeing that we have boxes and boxes of Christmas cards and 2019 calendars clogging up our workspace we feel bound to suggest that perhaps now might be the time to start thinking about it! It would really help us move around the office & shop more easily 😉.

So here we have it - all the Christmas cards are listed on our website here...

All the 2019 calendars and Diaries are listed here...

Summer shop news...

Summer has been busy with all the usual summer craziness, plus the sun (which is always a bonus!). We have loved receiving lots of really enthusiastic reviews for the books on our Summer Reading Challenge and our Wall of Fame in the shop is filling up nicely:

Our big intake of Inheritance Publications stock has been gradually added to the website, so keep checking the site and hopefully you will see the list growing each time you check back. You may wonder why this is taking so long, but many of these books are so fascinating that we just find ourselves reading them (one of the perks of the job!) and it tends to extend the time involved in listing them (!). We have just received another mini-review of one of the books (Stefan Derksen's Polar Adventure) which we quote below to whet your appetite:

It’s 1675 and 12 year old Stefan has found himself aboard the ‘Sea Dragon’ whaling ship. Sailing is in his blood! Stefan’s father, Otto Derksen had departed Harlingen, the Netherlands, in 1671, as 1st mate on the ‘North Star’ whaling ship. Otto never returned. And Stefan’s mother refuses to hear any more about his sailing desires. Instead she accepts an apparently cordial offer from a distant cousin to teach Stefan the shoemaking trade.
And yet as providence would have it, Stefan’s time with his cruel cobbler uncle leads him to run away, and Stefan navigates his way to Amsterdam. Mercifully, he bumps into an old acquaintance of his fathers who secures him board on the ‘Sea Dragon’. Stefan is a fast learner and shows promise of becoming an accomplished sailor. However life on board a whaling ship is full of hard, back-breaking work and fraught with dangers - not least the ever-changing elements. Stefan lurches from one adventure to another as they encounter storms, and calms; icebergs and polar bear attacks.
As the small whaling boats are sent from the mother ship in order to undertake the dangerous task of snaring whales, the boat Stefan is in becomes lost in the fog. Stefan and the five other sailors with him now face the hardest challenge of their lives. Survival! Survival in the treacherous, remote, unforgiving sea off the east coast of Greenland. Stefan’s feats are breath-taking, including  swimming in the freezing ocean to pull his fellow ship-wrecked sailors to land. They are stranded on an ice floe!
The men have to rely on their instincts to survive, hunting seals to assuage their gnawing hunger, finding shelter and ingenious ways to keep warm. All this in the face of Greenland’s approaching winter.
This truly is a fascinating and compelling read. Stefan and his sailor friends continue to pray and trust that the Lord will bring them through, even in the face of extreme adversity. They sing psalms to lift their spirits, and are finally brought to praise God for his remarkable deliverance.

And in other news... the AV Calendar for 2019 has arrived, we can't resist showing you a sneak peak because it has a contemporary new look...

We are busy adding screws and bolts to the blocks and ribbon to the backs so they are not quite ready for sending out yet but we are happy to take orders from now.
Keep in touch!

More News of the Sponsored AV Calendars

Here on the right is Duwen Musaka, sitting next to his wife Julia. He is a Zambian pastor and the distributor of our calendars. He has been busy since the second and final box arrived some weeks back, and sent a report after completing his work over Easter. Some extracts from it are given here:-

We thank God for the gift of calendars that our brethren are able to read a scripture daily and be helped to reflect on God. It is a wonderful work and edifying the inner man who is created in the image and after the likeness of Christ. I want extend our thanks to all those who participated in making these calendars available to us and reaching the intended brethren. We thank you for participating in extending the kingdom of God through literature distribution.

Duwen lives in Kabwe, which has a bad reputation as one of the ten most polluted places in the world! It was historically important for lead mining. But here Duwen is active in bringing something that is not tarnished by its environment - the Bible, along with other Christian literature. Our sponsored calendars are an added bonus:-

We had another distribution during Easter. Three of our branch churches gathered in one place to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. They had invited another church to join them. This brought the total number of churches gathered together to four. These are rural churches in central Zambia. We drove for 32 km in a village road to get to this place where they had gathered. After the service on the Lord’s Day, 16th April 2017, all the leaders and pastors gathered to receive the calendars. I took one calendar, assembled it to show them how it is done. I showed them that this is a scriptural calendar is giving us verses to read each day. I encouraged those who read local language Bibles to do the same in their own language. They were very pleased to receive such calendars which could help them read the Word of God daily. Others were asking about Bibles both in English and local languages. It was a joyous moment for them returning home from Easter celebration with a present from the United Kingdom.

On another occasion, four pastors came to Kabwe for a meeting from Keembe and Mukonchi respectively. These are rural areas in Central Province of Zambia. After the meeting, I had time to show them how to assemble the calendars. They were pleased to receive such calendars with scriptures for each day. One of them said, “This is now reading the Bible through to the end of the year."

What a privilege it is to be able to support these people! May the Lord grant his rich blessing upon them as they engage with his Word.

Sponsored Calendar Distribution News

Good news!
The final box of our sponsored AV Calendars has at last been received in Zambia, after delays from their postal service. So all 80 have now arrived safely.  Duwen Musaka, a pastor in Kabwe, and our contact out there, has already been on with the work of distribution of the calendars that came in the first box.  He sent pictures of some to whom they were given at a Conference in Kapiri Mposhi in the Copperbelt Province. One was also presented to Chief Chamuka of Chisamba district at a ceremony further south in Central Province. We look forward to more news in due course.

Photography Competition

This is the time of year when we finalise our printing for next year's AV Block Calendar.  The texts have been chosen (a labour of love), typed up and proof read, and these are being printed as we speak. But the pictures for the calendar back need to be chosen ASAP and it is causing us a headache. Someone (can't think who?!) came up with the bright idea of a photography competition to help us choose a suitable picture.  So here goes...

What we need is:
A good quality photo, landscape in shape but not necessarily landscape in content (although landscapes are of course popular).
Preferably UK based.
Something colourful with some detail in the foreground as well as the background.
Something you wouldn't mind looking at all year!

What we don't want:
Dark dreary landscapes.
People
Cars - at least not modern cars with number plates that can be identified.
Churches - we get complaints about churches, sorry! We are non-conformists after all.

If we pick your picture:
Well Done!
Your name will credited on the calendar
You can take your pick of any book in the shop up to a value of £10
You receive a free calendar when it has been printed.

Here are some examples of pictures we have used in the past...

If you think you have anything we might be interested in please get in touch with lorna@christianbookshopossett.co.uk .
Our deadline is next Monday 6th March.
We look forward to seeing your pictures!

AV Block Calendar 2015

Showing both sides of the calendar back (these are NOT two separate calendars)

We have taken delivery of our daily tear-off block calendar for 2015.  As ever it has personally chosen texts from the Authorised (KJV) Version of the Bible.  These are clear and bold for easy reading at a distance and/or for the partially sighted and elderly.  The block can be attached to whichever side of the calendar back is preferred, and then it has a hanging ribbon for placement in the most eye catching location.  Price is £7.25 plus £2.50 postage, as it was last year.  There were occasional printing errors in a small batch of the calendars last year, for which we apologise and have made every effort to make sure does not recur this time around.

Buy it now!

Sorry folks!

I have been told by a disappointed customer this morning that August 31st is missing from their 2013 AV Block Calendar.  Huge apologies for that error.  Our personal copy does have August 31st so I am assuming and hoping that this will only affect a small number of people.
If your August 31st is missing, here's how it should look... Lorna

Christmas Update

We're running desperately late with our December Bulletin so thought I ought to do a little update on Christmas stock.  Books have been flying off the shelves over the last few weeks, but don't worry if the book you are looking for is not in stock, most suppliers are able to send us more stock within a few days so there is still plenty of time to order before Christmas.
Our Charity Christmas cards are sold out apart from 1 design...

Robin & postbox - Pk of 10 Charity Christmas CardsRobin & Postbox Selection - Pk of 12If it's Robins & Postboxes you like we still have plenty of the packs of 12 with 3 designs in...
Have a look at all our remaining cards via this link Christmas Cards

Words of Jesus Calendar2012 calendars are also disappearing fast. The only appointment calendar left is Words of Jesus which is a really nice contemporary style for £3.99.  We have plenty of the AV Block Calendar

October

It's hard to believe that October is already here. Even though I spend a big part of the summer getting ready for the Christmas season (at the shop, not at home... that usually has to wait until Christmas Eve!) it still takes me by surprise when I find myself putting all the Christmas cards out in the shop. But, I have taken the plunge and they are all there, plus the 2010 calendars and diaries. Our own AV Block Calendar is selling well with over 300 gone already. Lots of people have commented on the quality of the pictures. These have been kindly provided by a customer who deserves some recognition. To see more of her beautiful photography, just check her website http://www.elainehagget.co.uk/ .

More details of our cards and calendars will be available on the website very soon, but if you are impatient just let me know and I will send you a Christmas/New Year information sheet. This year we are selling Barnabas Fund Charity cards, here's a taster of some of the lovely cards we have...

All Wired Up!

I'm really sorry, but we're still shut to the public. We felt it best to stay closed for another week to help the renovation work progress. We've got wires all over the place at the moment in our admin quarters - makes a change from children I suppose! However we're doing what we can, and that means business as usual for telephone and email customers, although some delays may unfortunately be experienced. Blame our hopeless phone company for not being competent enough to let us change our answerphone message - by the time they do it will be too late.
On a more positive note, we are reducing our postal rates as of now. Full details are on our website, but if you spend over £50 your order will go out post free. Also, our annual mail-out is about to go which, in addition to news, has some book promotions. Get in touch via lorna@christianbookshopossett.co.uk if you want one emailed and are not currently on our e-bulletin list.
Jeremy
PS. The AV Block Calendar 2010 is now available for those highly organised individuals who like to get these things done early. Same price as ever ie. £6.95; better photos than ever!

A Story Worth Sharing

We were told the following true story by a customer today. A friend of hers sends our AV Block Calendars out to a mission in Zambia. One of these is given to a man who is poor and also cannot read English very well. He has to leave home before it is light to get to work and doesn't get back before dark. Our calendar is perfect for him because he simply tears off the day's text on his way out and then reads and re-reads it during daylight hours when time allows. It is just as much as he can manage. How wonderfully God works to supply his people's needs! And it gives us such heart to continue to produce the calendar if He chooses to use it in this way. The texts for 2010 are being finalised as I write. May God bless them to the glory of His name and the good of many at home and overseas.

New Year

Happy New Year everyone. There is much to be thankful for as another year begins and as always much it seems to be concerned about. The first text on the AV Block calendar for the year is very appropriate... 'Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer ... with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.' Philippians 4:6. What an encouragement to know we have a heavenly Father who knows all our needs and hears all our poor prayers.

The first quote on the Gathered Gold calendar (as mentioned by Jeremy in the previous post) is also a good one to encourage us in our daily walk as we start a New Year...
'If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.' (C T Studd)

NB. Both these calendars are still available.

We plan to reopen the shop on Monday 5th January and look forward to serving you throughout 2009.

It's a gift!

For those that don't know, our AV block calendar is the only daily tear-off calendar in publication which purely has a Scripture quote from the Authorised (KJV) Version with no other verse or meditation. That may sound a pretty bold statement, but we believe it to be true. In fact if it wasn't we wouldn't produce it! It is really a labour of love (especially when the traditional KJV Bible is becoming less and less popular), but we know from many testimonies that it is spiritually profitable, and has been over many years. So, every year someone amongst our circle of family/friends is asked to choose 365 scripture portions for the calendar and they have often commented on how good it is for them to do this.

The other unique thing about our calendar is that it is doublesided - you don't have to choose which picture you prefer because you will get both! Perfect for indecisive people because you can simply turn the calendar around halfway through the year and you get to enjoy both pictures for 6 months each!

It is also worth mentioning that if you buy the 2009 calendar for yourself or as a gift for anyone, you are really getting value for money. As you tear off each text throughout the year you will come across Loyalty Vouchers and other hidden treasures qualifying you for extra discounts on books from the shop. Search for yourself - it's a gift at only £6.95!

Christmas is coming...

Okay, so we're only just past the middle of the year, but I'm afraid I am already up to my ears in Christmas cards and 2009 Calendars. Most of my Christmas cards have now arrived plus we have just taken delivery of next year's AV Block Calendar. I enjoy looking through everything and reminding myself of what I ordered back in January/February, but I don't want to wish time away so they probably won't get anywhere near the shop floor until October. Having said that, I have already had one customer ask to see Christmas Cards, plus we have received our first order for 2009 calendars! It's an up-side-down year in the retail world!

Preparing for 2009

I find it a strange experience to be preparing for 2009 right now, even presumptuous. But that is what is necessary if our AV Block Calendar is to be produced as usual next year. Our printer likes to have it with him in the February of the year before. I have just finished the final proof read, and devised adverts and vouchers to be included within the text block - some of which relate to 2010! This is all painstaking work, but thankfully it has already been scrutinised closely by able volunteers before ever I do my bit. It is amazing what can escape even the most experienced proof readers. However, this is not an excuse for the shoddiness which seems an increasing blot on the publishing industry as a whole. we pried ourselfs on the hiyhest standads... One good result of proof reading as far as I am concerned is that it helps din bible passages into my head - so it's not all drudgery.
Next job for the calendar will be selecting the pictures for front and back. There is more breathing space for that, which is just as well as Lorna and I usually spend ages arguing over them! If you haven't seen our calendar before, and would like to see an example go here. We accept orders for one or for one hundred (or more). Discounts for quantity - apply for details.
