Is it too early to talk Christmas?

So, dare we mention Christmas? We hate to do it too early, but seeing that we have boxes and boxes of Christmas cards and 2019 calendars clogging up our workspace we feel bound to suggest that perhaps now might be the time to start thinking about it! It would really help us move around the office & shop more easily 😉.

So here we have it - all the Christmas cards are listed on our website here...

Cosy Christmas Evening

Our annual Christmas evening is usually a cosy affair - much more pleasant than most Christmas shopping experiences! Homemade mincepies & cakes, steaming mugs of hot drinks, relaxing background music, friends and chat... you get the idea. Oh, and of course, there are the book deals! We're excited to be offering 'Wonders of Creation', the new coffee table book from Day One, at a 'you-won't-find-this-cheaper-anywhere' price, plus Helen Roseveare's new 'Count it all Joy' alongside a 3 for 2 on children's books. We've even sneaked in a few Martin Luther's - yes, we couldn't resist the Playmobil Martin Luther figure, so we have a few 'lil Luther's in the shop for you to pick up as stocking fillers!
We look forward to seeing you on Monday 27th, or if you really can't make it but you don't want to miss out on one of the offers, just give us a call to make your order (we draw the line at sending out mincepies though 🙂).

It's not too late yet!

If you're still wondering what to buy Auntie Gladys for Christmas (or anyone else for that matter), I'm sure we have the perfect book & there is still time to get it to you before Christmas.  Browse the website or give us a call - we are always happy to advise, plus we can even gift wrap it and send it straight to Auntie Gladys if that makes life easier for you!
Daily devotional books are always a welcome gift and there is a nice new one available called A Pilgrim's Treasury - this is a complete Bible Survey from Genesis to Revelation using the popular Pilgrim Bible Notes which have been compiled into book form for the first time. Or how about a lovely leather-look gift edition of daily readings compiled from George Whitefield's writings, or Hawker's Morning and Evening Portions, or Philpot's Through Baca's Vale (which you could even get as an eBook - now wouldn't that be convenient). I could keep going with suggestions, but perhaps a look through our Devotional section would help you make a choice.
If you are buying books for children before the end of the year, don't forget that we are currently offering a selection of children's books on a '3 for 2' deal. Have a read of our December eBulletin which gives details of this offer.

Don't forget LAST POSTING DATES are
WEDNESDAY 18th December for SECOND CLASS
FRIDAY 20th December for FIRST CLASS
We can also use our courier to get last minute deliveries to you right up to Monday 23rd December.

Advent

Immanuel - Zoar Publications
Only £1
For less money than an advent calendar you can have from us something vastly more profitable. It is a only a booklet but it will easily see you through the advent season. It is simply titled 'Immanuel', being an extract from Archbishop Ussher in the Apples of Gold Series of reprints. Its contents are highly distilled, as you would expect from a Puritan writer. So just take it steadily with frequent meditation (on the scriptures referred to I need hardly add.) You will be delivered from Christmas sentimentality, and settled upon biblical foundations, and may sense again the mystery and the joy of the incarnation of the Son of God.

To send or not to send?

My question this morning is - will you be cutting down your Christmas card list?  With the price of postage costs rocketing I made the assumption that Joe Bloggs would send fewer Christmas cards this year. Sensibly (or so I thought) I slightly reduced my stock level of Christmas cards so that I wouldn't have hundreds left over after Christmas.  Well, it seems to me that Joe Bloggs has decided his friends are worth the extra postage pennies and he is continuing to buy his Christmas cards at a rate of knots.  Consequently here we are in mid November & I am already running low on stock of Christmas cards.  For those customers out there who haven't already bought their cards I am interested to know if you intend to or not!  I have some lovely card suppliers who are perfectly willing to top up my stock of Christmas cards, so don't worry, the cards will be here if you want them.  But if you don't, I want to save some money too!
Let me know...

Christmas Update

We're running desperately late with our December Bulletin so thought I ought to do a little update on Christmas stock.  Books have been flying off the shelves over the last few weeks, but don't worry if the book you are looking for is not in stock, most suppliers are able to send us more stock within a few days so there is still plenty of time to order before Christmas.
Our Charity Christmas cards are sold out apart from 1 design...

Robin & postbox - Pk of 10 Charity Christmas CardsRobin & Postbox Selection - Pk of 12If it's Robins & Postboxes you like we still have plenty of the packs of 12 with 3 designs in...

Words of Jesus Calendar2012 calendars are also disappearing fast. The only appointment calendar left is Words of Jesus which is a really nice contemporary style for £3.99.  We have plenty of the AV Block Calendar

Give us a call if you have any queries - we will do our best to help.

Sorry, Christmas has come!

It's a long two weeks since I last posted.  Christmas has arrived at the Christian Bookshop, the cards and calendars are all in stock and displayed in the shop, and we have been inundated with new titles all vying for the coveted position of being No. 1 Christmas gift.  We haven't yet got all these books processed and reviewed, but keep an eye on our just in page for new titles being added regularly.  Notably, the new Faith Cook novel has arrived... I have had a quick read of it and found it a nice relaxing read and historically informative. There are also some great new titles from Christian Focus for children... the Jungle Doctor series has been added to, also the Risktakers, and the Little Hands.  All worth a look.  Don't forget, if you can't find the information you want on our site, just call (or email) and we will be happy to discuss and advise.
Have a look at the Christmas stock too (pdf), there are some lovely cards being sold in aid of Savannah Education Trust and of course a good selection of calendars, not forgetting the popular AV Block Calendar.

The customer is always right... right?

Christmas... those that know me will know I'm not the world's greatest fan, but when you're in the retail world, you have to do it... or do you? Some customers expect it, some don't. Last year, we had a telling off from a customer because we didn't have any 'religious' Christmas cards in the shop. By religious I gather she meant nativity style ones. All our cards have Scripture texts, but it has to be admitted I prefer not to have nativity scenes around. However, bearing in mind this customer's comments when I made my Christmas orders this year I included a few tasteful 'Eastern scene' styles, i.e. wise men on camels, Bethlehem skyline etc etc. So, I thought that should be another happy customer. Well, just this week we have had another ticking off (there are some pretty bossy customers around!) This time Jeremy was discussing with a customer a particular title they wanted sourcing and helpfully (or so he thought) asked...' would you like the book in time for Christmas?' 'I certainly won't be celebrating that pagan festival' came the indignant reply with full reasoned arguments for why not listed in great detail before Jeremy could get a word in edgeways!
Hum, sometimes I wonder... the customer is always right... right?
Season's Greetings!

By the way, if you do want books in time for the 25th December our courier will be delivering right up until 24th.

October

It's hard to believe that October is already here. Even though I spend a big part of the summer getting ready for the Christmas season (at the shop, not at home... that usually has to wait until Christmas Eve!) it still takes me by surprise when I find myself putting all the Christmas cards out in the shop. But, I have taken the plunge and they are all there, plus the 2010 calendars and diaries. Our own AV Block Calendar is selling well with over 300 gone already. Lots of people have commented on the quality of the pictures. These have been kindly provided by a customer who deserves some recognition. To see more of her beautiful photography, just check her website http://www.elainehagget.co.uk/ .

More details of our cards and calendars will be available on the website very soon, but if you are impatient just let me know and I will send you a Christmas/New Year information sheet. This year we are selling Barnabas Fund Charity cards, here's a taster of some of the lovely cards we have...

That Warm Winter Feeling

I've titled this shot 'The pedestrian's view (with blurred vision)'. It was taken on leaving the bookshop this evening. Dark nights, lighted windows and warm looking interiors filled with attractive goods just remind me of childhood Christmases. A touch of nostalgia overwhelms me... it must be age. Lorna has curtly reminded me that it is still only 6th December and although she has given way over trimming up the shop window it won't be taking place at home for some time yet! Basically the message is, there's a lot of work to be done between now and that unmentionable holiday season, and a lot of customers to serve.

Xmas Cards and Calendars

Back in the thick of it now, getting the buzz of life in a Christian Bookshop in the run up (it seems so long!) to Christmas. I have been ticked off twice now by customers for using the shorthand 'Xmas' instead of 'Christmas'. Apparently it takes the Christ out of Christmas and is from a secular mindset, but I maintain he was never in it anyway. The Bible is silent about celebrating 25th December, except that if we decide to observe a day or not, the principle is that we do it 'unto the Lord'. So, we sell cards to those who want to send greetings at this time of year, but just have no particular religious fervour in doing so.
Calendars are less contentious at least, although our AV Block Calendar has been slated for supposedly encouraging people to only look at one text of scripture a day! In fact it is intended to send readers to the Bible to look up the context, and we have received much positive feedback over the years to the profit people have found from it. It is selling steadily this year - down to our last 250 now. The message is clear: buy now before it's gone. For just £6.95 plus postage you get the condensed prayerful output of a year's worth of someone's Bible study. We always have to be about a year ahead in order to get it printed on time. The texts for 2009 are now just about ready for proof reading. It's like coping with 2 christmasses at once!

Scrooge?

I have to admit to being a bit of a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with celebrating Christmas at Christmastime, but what I get rather annoyed about is the way Christmas starts earlier and earlier and becomes more and more commercialised. Because of this I always used to refuse to acknowledge Christmas in the shop until at least November. However, I have in more recent years bowed to customer pressure and as you will see in this photo, the Christmas stock hits the shop floor in early October.
So, for anyone that is interested you can check out our Christmas cards and 2008 calendars by following the links from our website home page www.christianbookshopossett.co.uk . We specialise in sourcing Christmas cards with AV Scripture texts and we also produce a (very stylish) double-sided block calendar (see below) which we believe to be the only AV Block calendar available without any additional devotional writings.
